I Am from…

BUNKHOUSE BAR AND GRILL NAPKINS

QUOTES FROM  6TH GRADE STUDENT POEMS

I am from   . . .

Next time you reach for a napkin here at the Bunkhouse on Main Street in Rushville and before you wipe off that bit of Ketchup on your lip, take a moment to see if the napkin is telling you something, something profound and even familiar. There are twelve quotes from 6th grade student poems circulating around the restaurant.  These, and other deserving poems not represented, were from a remarkable assignment given by 6th grade language arts teacher Niki Waugh.  The prompt was: “I am from .  . .” and the students could take it from there to personalize it.  On the whole all the students betrayed an innate poetic style and they understood that the answer could not simply be “Rushville,  Gordon or Hay Springs, Nebraska,” but something more. The result was a deep dive into the visual details of their experiences and emotions. You will likely hear the echo chamber in your own heart when you consider where you are from.

Special thanks to Tom and Tawnie Eichenberger of the Bunkhouse Restaurant, Language Arts teacher Niki Waugh and all her 6th grade students at Gordon-Rushville Middle School.

This project is part of a larger exhibition called Art aRound Town, August/September 2024
